"Listening Posts Daphne Wright & Johnny Hanrahan Erected by Cork City Council to remember the many thousands of emigrants of Cork and Ireland who departed from this Quay. 9th September 2006 Lord Mayor Cllr Michael Ahern City Manager Joe Gavin"
A quay-side monument of sound was unveiled on 9th Sept 2006 to honour a generation of Irish emigrants.
Lord Mayor of Cork Michael Ahern unveiled the listening posts on the city's Penrose Quay - a traditional departure point for emigrant boats such as the Inisfallen
The listening posts are four stainless steel beacon-like structures which play recordings of interviews with emigrants, their descendents, those they left behind, workers on the emigrant ships, emigrants who want to return to Ireland and those who were glad they got away.
Their voices have been combined with marine, industrial, musical and abstract sounds played in random sequences 24-hours a day.
The project was commissioned by Cork City Council. Sculptor Daphne Wright, the Artistic Director of the Meridian Theatre Company Johnny Hanrahan and Sound Designer Dan Jones worked on the Listening Posts.
