St. Patrick's Bridge 1859
  • The first bridge here was opened in 1789 at a time when St. Patrick's Street was being created.
It was originally a toll bridge with a portcullis to allow shipping through.
That bridge was destroyed in a great flood in 1853.

A temporary wooden bridge spanned the river until the new (existing) St. Patrick's Bridge was opened in 1861.

John Arnott laid the foundation stone for the existing St. Patrick's Bridge in 1859.
He was created a baronet on that occasion and was Sir John when he opened it in 1861.

    Inscription on St. Patrick's Bridge:

"St. Patrick's Bridge      Foundation Laid on 10th November 1859
                      by
The Earl of Carlisle, Lord Lieutenant, Sir John Arnott MP, Mayor.

This Bridge was reconstructed in 1981
Paud Black, Lord Mayor of Cork
TJ McHugh, City Manager & Town Clerk"
